A Side-by-Side Review: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – Book vs. Movie

ince the release of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone" in 1997 by J.K Rowling, the book has become known worldwide. The movie was directed by Chris Columbus in 2001, and with the help of many they brought the magical world to life all in one movie. Both the movie and the book tell the story of Harry Potter, a boy who at the age of 11 finds out he is a wizard and begins his ongoing journey at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While the main plot stays the same there are many differences in how the narrative is shown in each medium. Throughout this essay it will discuss both the differences and similarities of each medium. Exploring the contrasts in the character development, the plot, the portrayal, and the plot of the magical world.

What Are the Main Differences?

One of the main differences between the movie and the book is the amount of detail in each of the plots. The book is very long and goes into great detail, showing the slow build up of the story. For example, the first two chapters of the book are strictly just introducing Harry and discussing the background to his life with the Dursleys, before finding out he was a wizard.  While on the other hand, when we discuss the movie, they have a certain two-hour time limit that they have to shorten and minimize the introduction to fit. They have to shorten every detail from the book to put it into about 20 minutes of an introduction. While the movie does an amazing job of showing the visuals to the viewers of their magical world, it lacks the amount of detail that the books would hold as well.

Including how the book can help the reader connect to Harry’s emotional state.  However, the book has multiple scenes that are completely erased from the film. For example, Harry’s first birthday cake from Hagrid was only in the movie and a more extended visit to Diagon Alley was only in the book. The book shows the amount of emotion he has, like how he feels like an outsider and how he has such a big awe towards the magic world. By taking out these important moments, the movie sacrificed a lot of the emotional depth that is well noticed in the book.

Does Character Development matter?

Character development is also a very important resource to look into when comparing the movie and the book. Specifically, Harry, Hermione, and Ron because they differ exponentially between the book and the movie. In the book, they capitalized Harry’s internal monologue and explained to the readers his emotional arc. The author really takes their time in describing the feelings that Harry had when he was at the Dursleys. They also show his disbelief at the wizarding world and his struggle with the realization that he is special. This deep explanation in emotion described throughout the book doesn’t come close to what is shown in the movie. The movie shows how Harry has wonder and awe towards the stuff he faces, but it doesn't fully go into depth about the journey and how he completely feels. Hermione's character has the same ideas.

The book shows more development rather than the movie. In the novel, Hermione is known for not only being very smart but is also someone who struggles with their sense of belonging. She strives to be perfect and seeks validation through her academics. Although overtime she finds a very good group of friends who help comfort her and grow with her. The movie, while showcasing Hermione’s intelligence, doesn’t dive as deep into her insecurities or her growth as a character. However, the movie does capture her more humorous side, which is more entertaining for the viewers to see.

What are the Key Strengths Between Them?

One of the key strengths throughout this book is its ability to show the themes of the friendships and their identities, as well as their belongings too. The book shows the importance of Harry’s relationships with Ron and Hermione. Not just as the people he hangs out with but as the people who help him on his journeys and adventures. Their bond is developed through shared experiences, and as time goes on, it becomes very clear that their friendship is a very crucial part of the plot and the story. Feeling like they belong is also talked about in more depth throughout the book. Harry’s journey to Hogwarts is not just about discovering his magical abilities but also about finding a place where he truly belongs. The book really recognizes Harry’s desires and goals, as well as his journey on how he achieves them. Finding a greater version of himself along the way.  In the movie, however, these moments are present but are not as emotionally displayed as in the book.

Both the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and its movie offer very unique experiences. The book shows a detailed story and goes into depth about the character development. It gives the readers the opportunity to imagine what the magical world is with their own imagination. The movie, while showing beautiful clips, still has to shorten the plot and simplify the depth of the story to fit within the two-hour time limit. While both the book and the movie capture great essences of Harry Potter, the book overall shows a more in-depth and detailed explanation to the story that the film can’t quite capture. However, the movie is still very enjoyable and visually stunning. I still would highly recommend watching both, considering they are both award-winning mediums.

Should College Be Free?

Jacob Gutierrez  English 102 Mr. Montoya  11 August 2025  Should College Be Free?  College is something many people do in life and can be a fun school experience, however college comes with a cost. From text books, to dorms, to tuition, college is pretty expensive, which begs the question, should college be free?  The average college student spends $20,000 - 60,000 on college tuition depending on the degree and college, additionally the college plays a big factor depending if it's a 2 year or 4 year college. Another factor is if the college is an out of state situation and public or private. Public colleges that are 2 years are usually community colleges such as Columbia Basin College, which costs an average of $7,000 per year. Now for a 4 year public college like Eastern Washington University, the tuition is around $9,000 per year. Notice that I said per year, and not in total, this is where the question “should college be free?” comes into play. Most student...
